Seasonal Crops

The Indian cropping season is classified into two main seasons-(i) Kharif and (ii) Rabi based on the monsoon.
The Kharif cropping season is from July –October during the south-west monsoon and the Rabi cropping season is from October-March (winter). The crops grown between March and June are summer crops.

The kharif crops include rice, maize, sorghum, pearl millet/bajra, finger millet/ragi (cereals), arhar (pulses), soyabean, groundnut (oilseeds), cotton etc. The rabi crops include wheat, barley, oats (cereals), chickpea/gram (pulses), linseed, mustard (oilseeds) etc.
The farmers are mainly dependent on these crops as they are easy to grow and require less investment. We at the cityfarm also focuses on selling these crops so that poor farmers can also get the opportunity to sell their crops.

HOW FARMERS SELL THEIR CROPS-

Farmers mostly sell their produce in their cart / carrier or by transports to nearby markets. While some grow crops which are taken by various middlemen, agents, companies etc.

Mostly farmers sell their produce in un-organised markets ( MANDI). A place which is not regulated and age old practice. Some of the farmers who are on contract or grow crops based in other markets like retail chains, govt. procurement agencies, multi-commodity exchange, exporter and also to agents / middlemen etc.

Agri commodity market needs drastic changes to remove middlemen and agents in between sale and purchase. The system should be transparent wherein farmer can come transact his / her produces. Real time ( mode price) of commodities should be available to farmers. A lot can be done with the help of AI for improving both domestic markets and export destinations.

Bringing pre-post harvest measures, innovative packaging solutions to farm level will enhance prospects of marketing and will minimize crops lost during harvest, storage and transport.
